Grand Rapids Educational Seminar — Bringing the Manufacturing Community Together to Tackle the Skills Gap

GRAND RAPIDS, MI–(Marketwired – September 09, 2015) – Executives from Michigan manufacturing companies will be coming together Wednesday, October 28th in downtown Grand Rapids for a free educational seminar and networking event to tackle issues surrounding the manufacturing skills gap. During the seminar entitled: “Filling the Manufacturing Skills Gap with Technology & Automation — Attracting a New Generation of Manufacturing Workers”; industry experts will be weighing in, offering their insights, experience, tools and resources available to address the various hurdles our manufacturers are up against.

The event organizers are hoping to bring the community of manufacturers together to develop relationships with other executives who are impacted by the same issues, to learn from and support one another. “Filling the Manufacturing Skills Gap offers employers a unique opportunity to connect and network with other people who face the same challenge and share ideas,” said Chuck Hadden, president and CEO of the Michigan Manufacturers Association. “The talent challenge is too big for you to solve by yourself. Events like this lay the foundation for partnerships and that’s what manufacturers need.”

It’s no secret that manufacturers within the state of Michigan are feeling the pressure to find ways to solve the looming skills gap for their organizations. Many are already experiencing talent shortages, in part due to the retiring baby boomer generation but also because of stereotypes the manufacturing industry seems to have been given, leaving open positions and career opportunities at the bottom of the list for the state’s future workforce.

Unlike similar events taking place across the state, this seminar isn’t focusing just on how to hire new talent, but instead looking at the skills gap from many different angles. The seminar’s agenda of educational sessions will challenge attendees to evaluate their company’s technology, brand and image, employee retention techniques, and involvement in the state’s manufacturing advocacy and legislation as well as apprentice and training programs. “As the current workforce retires and new jobs emerge through advanced technologies, employers are desperate to find qualified talent to fill their vacancies,” said Stephanie Comai, director of the Michigan Talent Investment Agency. “Apprenticeships, internships, and other work-based learning allows industry to “grow their own” workforce and ensure a future pipeline of qualified talent,” Comai added.

The seminar takes place in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan at the JW Marriott and will feature speakers from organizations committed to promoting a pro-manufacturing economy, leaders in manufacturing technology and employment agencies for the state of Michigan. “We’ve gained a lot of experience within the industry working with customers all over the world and we felt we had some valuable knowledge to offer manufacturers in our home state to help alleviate strains the skills gap is creating,” said Radley Corporation’s Sr. Vice President, David Barks.
